We were absolutely thrilled to have very special guests at Bearna Golf Club this weekend. Olympic gold medalist and 800m world record holder, David Rudisha, along with the great mentor of Kenyan running, Br. Colm O’Connell arrived on Sunday where they were both presented with Honorary Life Membership.
Bearna Golf Club has ties going back a few years with the local Kenyan community. In the past few years we have twice hosted a Kenyan golf day, which introduced many of our members and guests to Kenyan food, culture and traditions. Both days were a great success, and we were delighted to have hosted the Kenyan Ambassador to Ireland and many members of the Galway Kenyan community. This culminated in a group of members from Bearna going on tour to Kenya and playing some of their wonderful golf courses. From all the stories I have heard it is safe to say that a mighty time was had by all.
Pat and Br. Colm have ties goingn back many years too, way back to the early 60’s, where they both attended the university in Galway (now NUIG) and played football against each other. Both have had considerable sporting achievments since they first met. Pat has won three all-ireland’s senior football titles playing for Galway, as well as six all-ireland golfing medals. Br Colm, since leaving Ireland for Kenya all those years ago, has become known as ‘the Godfather of Kenyan running’ and has trained 25 world champions and 4 Olympic gold medalists.
Br Colm has informed us that David has his own set of golf clubs back in Kenya. At the moment all his focus is on his running, but David has told us that he hopes to return one day, such was the great welcome he received from all parts of the Galway community. Thank you David and Br Colm for honouring us here in Bearna Golf Club with your presence. We look forward to seeing you both in the future!
